Des Binns

Sad news this week of yet another of our long serving HF members, Des Binns, who died recently at the age of 94.

Although Des had not walked with the club over the past few years he was always a 'regular' on the coach from the mid nineteen eighties onwards, very rarely missing the fortnightly outings. He was also a walk leader during the early years.

A keen sportsman, playing both football and cricket at a good level, he became an umpire in the local leagues when his cricketing days were over. He was also a keen Doncaster Rovers supporter and season ticket holder, which allowed him to continue his interest in football.

Des was always willing to join other leaders to pre-walk forthcoming routes and the attached photograph was taken on one such occasion on a 'recce' with John Allen and others, near Hutton-le-Hole, a village on the edge of the  North Yorkshire Moors. John was confidently pointing out where they were on the OS map but you can tell from the look on Des's face that he didn't believe a word of it and thought it more likely they were lost!!  Exciting days.

Those of us who walked with Des will have fond memories of a quiet, thoughtful man, but also someone who had many little-known interests and talents.
